Welcome to an exciting installment of Custom Rules, as this time we have tons of new rules for you to explore. Since Embergard, there have been a number of first edition warbands that did not have full warscrolls and updated, bespoke, and individualized ways to play them. Instead, you were told to pick one of two Grand Alliance warscrolls from the warband’s faction/alliance and go from there. These genericize your old favorites, but also are not even remotely balanced competitively. The order ones are good, the death ones are disgustingly bad. Chaos and Destruction have one good and one bad apiece. But still, you want to feel like your Gryselle’s Arenai and Domitan’s Stormcoven are different warbands. Play them both as GA:O Cursaders, and they won’t really feel that way. Play with the following scrolls, and they darn sure will!
This time, we have custom made warscrolls for every missing faction. All old warbands have something here. I’d love to hear your feedback on them both conceptually or after playing games at SpentGlory@gmail.com or you can hand it direct to Schatt on the Vassal Discord.
This here’s a part of Spent Glory’s Custom Rules series, and you can see other custom rules on the page by clicking here.
Let’s dive in! You can also play these warscrolls direct into Vassal by downloading a mod here
Grand Alliance: Chaos

There’s a TON of potential extra glory on this card – this might be too strong as it gives essentially 3 glory extra to the Reavers player, and they’ll get two out of sequence damage and extra cards and dice. I also believe the scything is just supposed to be for Karsus’ range 1. These friends look like suicide aggro machines which is exactly what you’d like. BA/WR here we come!

Magore gains gorefist too?! I do love that he can heal once and the built in damage reduction can be crazy good. Counter-charge is also going to make Bloody Retribution very scary! BARF and BADS will be filthy with them.

Wracking Change once per battle round is going to make ole Vorty a real scary ranged damage threat, and in the power step even! This is of course mitigated by the fact you have to spend a whole action to summon the blue horror still, which you’ll want to do in order to get Silver Tether off. Consider ES/CC/Nexus with them

Oaths are back, which I love, but again the glory on the warscroll is potentially very high and could make this competitively unfair. Though you did have to announce it! Grawl’s Heel push is huge distance. Dark Destiny is going to win some games for sure, and I really like Seized Trophy (though as written is would not inspire you since it didn’t happen in the power step) – but just imagine a second Great Strength or something! BA/ES might be a good starting point.

Oh Grashrak, my beloved! You’re as beautiful as the day I lost you. This one seems reasonably fair and worth playing around with. Pick your aggro flavor of choice and go to town. Wrack/DS for me

Book of Woe is back, but the territory has to be corrupted now which limits it somewhat. Fortunately, you get to corrupt mid-round with two of your other warsroll abilities. The always-available nature of warscrolls should make this warband inspire somewhat quickly (and take a peek at their fighter cards on Underworlds DB – you NEED them to inspire). ES/PP might be my first test with them.
Grand Alliance: Death

Anything is better than the godawful Grand Alliance Death scrolls. This one might be too frighteningly powerful like we saw Drepur be in first edition though. Auto-inspire, warscroll push an enemy, out of sequence attack, damage reduction, double sidestep, movement reduction; They have so many great tools. Despite no glory on the warscroll, this is a contender for strongest of the bunch. Blazing Wrack looks juicy.

Push an enemy two hexes in a power step! Turn off enemy cards in the power step! Wasrcroll Sidestep! The damage manipulation is potentially big too, but this warband is going to be a control machine with unlimited teleports too. Can’t wait to see what Wrack/Pillage looks like with them in practice – I’m guessing it’s dang good.
Grand Alliance: Destruction

While I love the idea of Showin’ Off, you’re never going to benefit from it. Unless you make great use of ‘Avin a good Time (you bet your bucket that I will). The warscroll otherwise contains their most flavorful and fun pieces from first edition, and while they may not be great, they’ll be like old times. Slap BA/CC or BA/DS on them and have fun!

Somehow, Primacy returned. At least this instance of warscroll glory can go to either player, but we’ve seen before how oppressive it can be for Headkrakka to have manipulation over it. This warband is a good 4×4 stats wise and can do disgusting things with BARF or whatever 4×4 aggro you like (DS, BA, RF, Wrack, CC, etc).
Grand Alliance: Order

All guard all day when adjacent to a friend makes me want to try DS despite the 3-fighter elite issues you usually have. You’ll stay uniter until they kill you! Likewise you can do fun things with Nexus and that ability. Having grievous that doesn’t take a runemark whenever you attack from next to the leader is BONKERS and again take things that ask you to clump up (DS/NP, why not) and you’ll #SlayQueen. Peal of Thunder will also let you snag tokens for NP purposes. What a unique throwback with the current decks!

I like the modification to the inspire that lets you get it mid-round if you’re pushing into enemy territory, but their movement still says you’ll be better off doing ES/HG/CC/NP to cook up something passive at home. Piercing Stare is going to be HORRENDOUS to fight against though! Add that to Indomitable reducing damage and Grimnir’s Blessing giving potentially multiple “sorry bro, he lives” per game, and you’ve got a tough take and hold nut to crack here.

Magic on a warscroll?! if the dice cooperate, you’re doing nasty things. If they don’t you’re in trouble. Gamblers might have fun with it though. Abasoth’s Unmaking is potentially game-breaking but also funny as it gets, so let me know what happens! I’m pretty sure that one is once per game and not round.

Bloodbane venom is diecy but you can potentially get an after-you-hit twist the knife, and potentially 2-3 bonus damage! Welcome back, pit trap! Sacrificial Knives requires you to use the printed-on-the-card attack, but we might need to test it out and FAQ it if you can reach crazy levels with adding damage from Grievous. Crimson Rejuvenation will make you feel really good when playing a clumping deck like DS or NP.

Change = inspire = Reckless Fury merchants. Heck, even Raging Slayers! Swift as the Wind will help there too. Too bad Karthaen’s horn still takes a whole action. Double sidestep is great, and access to a once per game scything is potentially incredible (though can’t use upgrade weapons, fortunately). Healing Breeze is going to feel so potent when it lands, too. These guys look like a ton of fun.

A hold, ranged, counterpunch with the ability to prevent drivebacks and get guard, this warband is going to play a lot like Thundrik’s Profiteers but probably better. ES/CC/HG/NP and se what happens!

Holy Moly that’s a lot of text, and even I am saying that. Each figher having their own way to inspire in beautiful though. Damage reduction is also gorgeous, and to a minimum of zero! Traxya’ getting 2 damage clapback on a crit even uninspired is crazy – pack some rerolls and sit in a waystone hex! This warscroll’s scything lets you use any range 1 attack you want, so enjoy a little mayhem with Desperate Rage or Coordinated Deathblow. Fatal Flourish on top of that will be devastating if you like to put all your eggs in one basket (I sure did when I played Arenai). Executioner stays crit grievous but is once per round which I think is reasonable. This warband is a suicide aggro like before, and as such you’ll have fun with them.

More spells! This is much like Cursebreakers but with more aggro and less hold implications. Every spell having one attempt per battle round is NUTS! Dish out a charge token or break an upgrade with Malediction will be really cool and making the opponent choose is nice. Their card draw will be disgusting in the right matchups thanks to Master of Ancient Lore. We also must pass the crown now, so plan your activations wisely.
Wrap
What do you think? I personally can see some really interesting angles to take a few of these.
- Do some warbands need a change to better fit their old deck’s theme?
- Do some warbands seem too strong or too weak?
- Do the warscrolls give you appropriate levels of deck choice? Will you tryhards finally play something other than BA/PP?
- Are these more fun than the Grand Alliance warscrolls, at least?
If you and your group decide to take these out for a spin I would absolutely love to hear about it at SpentGlory@gmail.com. Whether it’s a dedicated tournament, a fun one-off game night, or the new way you play every week, I hope you enjoy Schatt’s custom warscrolls!
