The NOVA Open 2023 happened this month, and they held a painting showcase called Capital Palette. These people have absolutely mind blowing skill. Unfortunately they do not include artist names or handles in this album, so I’m not able to promote the individual painters. There’s some great Underworlds content in here though! The above image of the Demonic Steelhearts’ Champions is one of these featured images. I particularly like the Dark Eldar bits conversions and marvelous weathering/damage/texture on the armor.
Other WHU models featured in Capital Palette:
Headkrakka’s Madmob
Grib, Da Wonky Lance
Mir Kainan
The Crimson Court
Gorechosen of Dromm
Gobbaluk
A mixed bag of Orruks including some WHU
The Wurmspat
Diorama featuring Myari
A new Errata, FAQ, and FaR list were published at long last. Not really a community made thing, but worth sharing for those who missed it.
Path to Glory, the premiere Underworlds content producers, have put out a Voidcursed Thralls meta analysis, with a focus on Nemesis! Both Mark and George have substantial competitive experience, and are particularly talented with this Rivals deck. Definitely worth a read for those who plan to either use or face off against this deck in any format. They also have a card-by-card review here if you want to dive deeper.
You’ve likely heard of the Battlemallet Nemesis Deck Library (and if not, definitely go check it out), but the Staggerers blog has just launched a similar concept for Championship decks. If you’re interested in Championship, want a little help deckbuilding, or just can’t get enough of card theory, check it out and be sure to stop back in every so often as it is updated!
Flaviuz over at the Monkey’s Hex has put up a guide on how to maximize two of the newest boards that look to be released for the upcoming Season: Deathgorge, at least based on the promo images. If you’re looking to get into competitive play and will be picking up the new season core box, give it a read
It’s been a long time since we have had any Tier Lists posted, but this month saw multiple come out! Obviously these don’t mean anything beyond opinion, and are the subject of lots of disagreement, but can be fun to read regardless. Centre of Attention posted a Nemesis tier list, with a video discussion here, and Critical Focus Channel has put a lengthy discussion by season together as well
Recently, a player in Australia lost the fighter cards to their Steelheart’s Champions. Something that far out of print is very difficult to recoup, and printing cards isn’t everybody’s jam. Fortunately, community hero and all around great dude Saxthom was on it, and mailed some extras he had laying around all the way from Arizona. We really have a great community and something so little yet so big is a testament to how awesome this game is as well as the people who play it.
I_am_not_Alpharius is back at it again, this time with some stunning Hexbane’s Hunters. Check out the blood on Aemos, the glow on Pock’s back armor plate, and the freehand HH icon on Brydget’s greatcoat! This painter continues to impress. But wait, we’re not done yet! They also cooked up some gorgeous object-source-lit Spiteclaw’s Swarm. Hot diggity. Fast becoming a staple of these monthly highlight articles, we also have a beautiful rendition of Grinkrak’s Looncourt (a sorely underrepresented warband) done in Old-World style goblin colors. The freehand is stunning! Brush accuracy next level, and the non-metallic metal still impresses all these warbands later
Surely you’ve seen enough Tzeentch recently. But have you seen the Exiled Dead with Bird Deintalos? Cool conversion by Mithrandir_mvm and with all this pink and blue, it’s easy to see why he got Exiled.
Last month I showed off the Gorehulk painted by Nightscale Studio- this month the Gorechosen of Dromm gang’s all here. Excellent glazing work, and the skintones are top notch.
Necromantic magic for the Sons of Velmorn by th_miniatures. Look at that purple! The conversion work is great too
Enrico Sartori recently won a painting competition in Argentina with these Myari’s Purifiers – both as a warband and for Myari as an individual miniature. Take a peek – it’s not hard to see why they got first prize
More Sons of Velmorn #SorryNotSorry. This time we have a full graveyard display board built up by Steve Herck – the yellow is a great choice and pairs really well with the purplish non metallic metal work
Stuart McQuarrie with Crown & Dagger Miniature Painting recently took a Bugman’s award for Judges’ Choice with Elathain’s Soulraid. Hit a home run with that crab, good gracious
Sami Dawaigher put together these bright and bold colored Godsworn Hunt for their AoS army, but Underworlds models is Underworlds models! Give them a look
Dagg3ersB has posted a beautiful Stormcoven rendition – red is such a fantastic armor color when done right. Great effect on the gold as well!
Dr_caoc posted pictures of his Headsmen’s Curse, with some excellent photography work and ominous lighting. Warm tones are a rarer choice for death warbands, particularly this one lately, but I dig the vibe.
Morgok’s Krusha’s in a stunning purple by terrainguy. I like the effect on the bone and very realistic basing
Studio489 finished up a commission job for Skabbik’s Plaguepack, and took the frankly excellent option to give them pink plague clouds to offset the acid green glow on the water and warpstone. I flirted with the idea myself and ultimately didn’t go that route, but this makes me wish I had. Stunning effect!
Kyle Dalton (Pale King Hobby) hits yet another home run two daemons from Ephilim’s Pandaemonium, showcasing Spawnmaw and Kindlefinger. Stars sparkling in the flames, mottled skin, precision work on the eyes, great edgework for the gums. It’s not even finished yet and it’s already greater than the sum total of my life’s painting work. Save some talent for the rest of us, big guy.
Skabbik The White by Kriegschneck. White robes was great choice to contrast with the rest of the foulness, and the triangle trim is very well done.
Skabbik month marches on! This time PHminiatures shows off their yellow and purple approach, and included a youtube tutorial if you wanted to copy it for yourself
Tyler Mengel (the legend himself) speedpainted Arnulf recently. Still one of my favorite models in the range despite how often he lost me games back in Sheadspire…
If you like video battle reports, Critical Focus Channel is among the best out there. Here’s a close fought Rivals match they recorded featuring the new Sepulchral Guard and the Headsmen’s Curse, and here’s a Nemesis recording of Headsmen’s Curse vs Skabbik’s Plaguepack
More plaguepack, this time in green and purple by rushputin. People really put a lot of love into this warband, almost every paintjob I have seen is grody and good
Xandire’s Truthseekers by Richard Dixon at Vulkan’s Imaginarium. Sharp work on the gold, and I love the mask on Stormrider here
A great turquoise take on the Crimson Court by Christine Orton. Teal and red is such a great color pairing and she’s absolutely done the warband justice here!
More Xandire’s, but this time in a comic book style by Steven Soejitno. Really makes me think of the Archer TV series. Look out for the upcoming season of Warhammer Underworlds: Danger Zone
Thain Fourth-and-Last by Anulian with a sinister “metal in the moonlight” looking effect. Perfect for the Gnarlwood and the cooler tones hit the Death warband vibes perfectly
Antti Jäppinen posted an incredibly detailed (and well photographed) Rippa’s Snarlfangs this month. The blood on those jaws…
Tran Fabrice put together some great Shadeborn, with proper shadowy cloaks that fade very smoothly from almost-white blue to the deepest purple around, and the leader’s weapons look ace too
Christine Orton is back with Kainan’s Reapers – Blue, Bone, and Brown are just a classic combo and her version looks great. The weapon effects are a nice touch too.
While it’s not explicitly a community shoutout for this month in particular, exciting news that the US Golden Daemon competition will include a specific category for Warhammer Underworlds in 2024! Bigger exposure to the top painters in our community and more attention to the best miniatures line that Games Workshop produces. I can’t wait to see what our artists cook up for the competition!
That’s all for now. If you’ve spent your glory in interesting ways, let me know so I can include you in next month’s roundup!
