Toni Garcia of CHK Studio has completed a jaw-dropping Hurrk da Howla as a part of the Big 3 Underworlds painting challenge (more details below). With the new errata to make the horn boy take a step up, a showcase paintjob was the easy choice for featured image this month!

This month, the Underworlds Underground Podcast had Bridget on to talk about her strategies and experience with Starblood Stalkers. With a couple more Hold Objective options out there, I expect to see more of this warband in the future!
Path to Glory, as many of you know by now, is a great podcast for competitive players and often does very in-depth reviews of the latest content. While everything that’s dropped in the latest release tsunami has been solid, I wanted to particularly call out George and Zach for killing it on the Rimelocked Relics episode – give it a listen (and then build a dozen decks with it!)
The Youtube channel M2on2 has continued to post unedited ‘live play’ Underworlds games, and this month celebrated having uploaded their 69th game. Multiple games in Wintermaw have already been recorded, so pop in to see some of those new Rivals decks and warbands hit the table!
Mark “Baconbourne” from Path to Glory has started up a new series of blog posts for that page, titled “Bacon’s Bits”. 10/10, no notes. The first entry is about the card Final Say from Daring Delvers, which I have personally struggled to find a place for in the pas. He makes a case for where it is best played and whether it belongs in your decks. Always excited to see more content, especially from somebody of this caliber. Check it out! Additionally, he’s dropped another article comparing the use cases for Malevolent Masks and Rimelocked Relics, and while he has said he can’t promise weekly content, the seed has been planted in my mind now…
A new Underworlds Errata/FAQ has come out, and M2on2 has a helpful 2 minute video summarizing the changes. Daggok’s got a tiny boost, and Ephilim has been pulverized, as has force of frost to some extent. Let’s see how things shake up (and how much Rimewyrm’s Bite we see all over the place now). Some community-made ‘Errata cards” have been released, updating with the new changes. A few of my local guys have found these very helpful.
Staggerers is back, with a farewell to Nethermaze. With Wintermaw coming in and Nethermaze rotating out, the blog takes a look at what cards will be most sorely missed. Staggerers also has a big announcement – they have launched a page-specific Discord Server! If you want another place to hang out and talk Underworlds, here’s one for you. They even have a sub-channel for submitting lists for their Championship deck library.
Cinderfall Gaming continues to crank out live play videos for multiple game systems, and have not forgotten to include Underworlds in the mix! They reached out to me personally this month asking that I let you all know to check them out – show some support and hopefully we can encourage them to play more WHU on their channel and drive more interest in the community.
The Agents of Sigmar have put out a fun video titled “A beginners guide to every current Underworlds Rivals deck!” – great review for both newer and more veteran players, with a ‘best decks for newer players’ segment at the end. They did forget Fearsome Fortress, so just take my word for it that FF is a GOATed deck and you should play it.
Critical Focus Channel has continued their Lore series, this month touching on the newest season of Wintermaw. They also hosted an interview this month with Eggiwegs, a ‘real life’ content creator who also has recently focused on bringing people over from Warcry into Underworlds. Great to see the game expanding to new audiences. Critical Focus Channel has also put out a ‘how to play Underworlds” video that covers most of the game mechanics and can be helpful to some people who learn by watching rather than reading. Productive month out of that crew!
Jon Grant Miniatures has launched his own personal Nemesis Decks library, which while much smaller than the Batlemallet one still can expand your options while browsing other decks. Peep the page and see if there’s something that sparks interest!
Skyler from What the Hex has continued his What the Decks YouTube series, and has started mixing in reviews of community built decks, which is great to see. More engagement, and different ideas/styles showcased, while also getting to see an expert opinion on deck modifying rather than building from the ground up. Check out this critique of Horthgorn’s Malevolent Masktrappas!
While we’re on the topic of What the Hex, the podcast got all four hosts together to cover the big splash to the meta based on the TEN new releases in the past few weeks. Great listen for casual and competitive types alike.
Events/Organized Play
In a moment that took most everybody in Underworlds by surprise, we have recently learned that the ITC (recently acquired by GW) has been following Underworlds events, and now awards an ITC winner’s trophy to the highest placing individual! You can register your BCP events with the ITC to help your players get their points. Here’s the post (in Spanish) on Critico y Culo explaining the whole thing. Exciting times, and hopeful signs for the growth of the competitive scene worldwide.
Polish individual championships went down this month – Domitan players took 4 out of the top 5 spots. Third place was secured by an odd Crimson Court. Still, there were 25 different warbands represented, which is nice. Here’s a video reel from the event, and here’s Honza’s best painted warband
“The Champion of Levant” took place in Mazarrón, Spain this month, with Hexbane taking the gold, multiple Sepulchral Guard, and even Zondara making a placement in the top 5 in this championship event. Check this link for decklists and more details!
The Second National Championship of San Marino finished this past weekend, which will send three people to the World Championships in Atlanta in November. Congratulations for such a solid event! 20 players and 16 different warbands. Cyrenai defeats everyone, with Alessandro with Gorechosen’s and Matteo with Hexbane’s Hunters following. Tickets for worlds goes to first, second and fourth (Daniele with Domitan) because Matteo already won one at the Civitavecchia’s event a month ago. Atlanta is looking like it’s going to be huge this year, and Google Translator is going to be put to work!
Nick Bayton out of England continues to be a total legend and ran a 52 player nemesis clash in advance of the Grand Clash at Warhammer World. Top two were both running Hungering Parasite!
What happened with the Warhammer World Grand Clash, you ask? NINETY SIX PLAYERS met up for battle, and per reports they could have easily sold another 40+ tickets had there not been another event there that day limiting spots for sale. Amazing. Here’s some stats and a writeup on The Magmahold by Laura, and congrats to Sepulchral Guard/Rimelocked Relics for taking the gold! There was another undefeated player using Exiled Dead and Beastbound Assault, interestingly enough.
UPCOMING
In the off-chance that you both can make it on short notice and don’t already know, the Alberta Classic is being held May 4th and has multiple tickets to Worlds available. Stem the Canadian tide! I have high hopes for my boys out of Arizona and Wisconsin this year.
May 25-26 is CTC in Ottawa CA with 3 tickets to worlds up for grabs
THE CLÄSH Vol. II will be held in Stuttgart, Germany on May 25th and is billed as a 3 round Nemesis best of three event that is accessible to newer players. ‘The goal is to welcome regional and international guests to the attractive venue in the city center’
KublaCon 2024 is being held Memorial Day Weekend 2024 at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport. Friend of the page Doot Doot will be running Underworlds on Sunday May 26th, with demo games from 2-5 PM, followed by a Rivals Tournament from 5-8. Swing by and support underworlds expanding to a new audience and venue!
The Copenhagen Clash is a Grand Clash event June 1st in Copenhagen, Denmark. The event will be five rounds best of 2 nemesis, but if you’re interested there will also be two free mini tournaments the Friday prior in Championship format. Only painted warbands are allowed, but don’t fret f yours aren’t painted, because they have a library of 50+ painted warbands to borrow from! Check out this video showing them off.
June 9th, there will be a Nemesis clash in the BeNeLux region of the Netherlands – check this post for details
Thanks to the success of the Austrian Masters in January, there will now be a 2 day nemesis best of 3 event in Salzburg Austria on June 29-30. Rules cut-off and decklist submission deadline is on the 22nd of June 2024. Registration mandatory, please send an E-Mail to:store@sirengames.at , use WHU Salzburg as a reference.
The Goonhammer Open will be held July 6th and 7th at the Sheraton Baltimore Washington Airport in Linthicum and for the first time ever, they will be holding an Underworlds event! The plan is for a 12 person one-day Nemesis event that will have a ticket to Worlds on the line. More details and a comp packet to come. If you’re able to attend please do – Goonhammer is a huge online presence in the warhammer hobby with effectively no Underworlds involvement up to this point, and it would be great to show them support in turn for supporting our game – who knows what growth we could see as a community with their reach?
And to close out, I’ll keep hammering it because I want to see YOU at the Tacoma Open on July 20-21st for a Nemesis Grand Clash. Find me and get a little take-home gift. It won’t even be a disease! Please help me defeat the Canadians because I can’t figure out how to do it.
Painting/Hobby
I teased it at the start of this roundup, but a really cool community painting challenge is going down on the Volomir group out of Spain, where thirty participants (with more following along!) will have two months to paint an Underworlds warband with their highest-skill abilities. The official participants have a 15 day check in period to track progress, and anybody else playing at home can post their things (or find them) by searching #Big3Underworlds. The intro post, which shows off the competitors and their plans can be found here, and the progress after the first checkpoint is displayed here
I do want to take a little time and call out some of the cool stuff I have seen so far from the Big 3 contest:
Jose de la Iglesia AKA Phobos is doing the Gnarlspirit Pack in a four-elements scheme. Here’s their icy Lupan Longcut, and a lightning wreathed Crimson Kheira
Sandro Casas is doing Daggok’s Stab-Ladz, and has already got something special going on with Jagz Da Bleeda
Julio Marshall is doing Skabbik’s Plaguepack – here’s the priest himself in quite the grimy yellow
Eliseo Lorenzo has picked Ironskull’s Boyz (YES!) and has started work on Basha in a neat white and red
Toni Garcia of CHK Studio (whose Hurrk da Howla is the featured image this month) is working on Daggok’s Stab-Ladz and I am especially digging the mossy shoulder’s on Grakk da Hook. Stunning teal and a green fade on the weapons are top tier. He also finished up an old Skaeth, and this WIP on a headswap Gorath is so cool
Mario Rueda Garzón took the Gorechosen of Dromm – jimminy Christmas get a look at the skin blending on the leader here
There has been some other stuff put out by community members not part of the official Big 3 Underworlds contest, but following along on their own, and I wanted to pump them up too:
Omar Nieto Aguilá made some gorgeous Chosen Axes
Raul Lamban Studio showing off Prince Duvall in bright red
Progress on Alathyr of Cyreni’s Razors by Javier Rodríguez Lozano
OK, now on to the regular/Non-Big 3 Underworlds stuff:
Panom Bounak of PB Miniaturesart has posted some great orange armored Morgok’s Krushas in a very stylized appearance, with stippling on the cloth, moles and other features on the skin, and more. Very impressive painter out of Thailand who has done up a few other warbands in similarly impressive ways.
JWMiniaures finished the Snyp Padpaw they began work on last month, and it looks super slick
Torchic_armada finished Zondara’s Gravebreakers in a monochrome-adjacent Cursed city flair which looks very nice on them. Moonlit zombies and a werewolf? Spooky.
You know the Zone of Banishment card from Storm of Celestus? Well check out this AMAZING recreation of that card by Volomir Miniatures
Stunning Cyreni’s Razors by Sergio Nunes in a style we’ve come to expect from this masterful painter.
Domitan’s Stormcoven in a remarkably smooth finish by Stuart Parry of 8-Bit Jesus #OnlyTheFaithful – they also cooked up a stark contrast fluorescent color Ephilim’s Pandaemonium.
Ironskull’s Boyz with a neat red accent on the classic yellow by Vick’s paint. Fingers crossed they’re the next rereleased old gang?
Skritch Spiteclaw in a beautiful red-orange by The_Grey_Lord
Ananimuzzz has completed the Crimson Court in a black and bone scheme, and it’s looking great. The red cloth is really striking in contrast! You can see some cool video shots on their instagram too. They also recently completed Blackpowder’s Buccaneers. Here’s a link to their Myari’s Purifiers I missed last month
Tomáš Pekař has posted a jaw-dropping Marshall Faulk Velmorn in a classic Bretonnian quartered-heraldry style, and it’s right up my alley
Opus Wild has painted some very poppin’ color spots on Skabbik’s Plaguepack. Also featured this month is pure-oil-paint Morgok’s Krushas, and some really good texture on Zondara’s Gravebreakers.
Redwood177 has painted some black and red Domitan’s Sotrmcoven, and it’s hard to pass up the Anvils of the Heldenhammer scheme
SlapChop Skabbik’s by FollowerOfNurgle2024 – not finished yet but honestly already good enough to go live if you ask me
Allan Tidd finished a stony Mollog who has literal glow in the dark paint in the pool on the base. Fun stuff! Here’s Stalagsquig with a similar UV activated effect. Here’s the full warband together!
Bonesplittaz may have been ejected from AoS, but they persist in the Underworlds! Gav Lapit-Jones shows us that Headkrakka is here to stay (though maybe we oughta do something about that Primacy token…)
Skinnerkin by Agents of Sigmar – really liking these new models personally. Here’s their take on the Brethren of the Bolt with the old Flagellant colors
Tom Major posted a fun diorama of Mollog and his Mob at the entrance to their cave, about to be ambushed by Skaven
Stab Ladz with some great green to pink skin transitions by FishBulber
Cyreni’s Razors by AKoboldPrince/Etienne Olieu – I love the dappled light-shining-through-water effect on these very colorful elves. They also completed Gorechosen of Dromm this month
AVAST! Blackpowder and his crew are paddlin’ yer way in this diorama by Rodrigo Lucas
“The Vampire Family” by Ivan Serra. Check out the glowing green ghost under the basing! Here’s Vellas, ready for her closeup
Zondara’s Gravebreakers by limwy1978 – scroll for closeups of the faces! Cool variety in colorations as well
Blackpowder’s Buccaneers in a Santa Claus style by RalyxTheRed – the Macaw patterning, the striped pants, red gnoblar noses, a classic
Ylthari’s Guardians in a box art scheme by Maleficent_Fox_2853 – great to see these old favorites cropping up every so often
Sons of Velmorn in a Lich King style by Sekh765 – the frostblade on the King himself is something to see
The Dread Pageant in a gorgeous burgandy by Stephen Lewis. Excellently painted too.
Andreas Karlsson made some cool custom counters for their Shadeborn
Great rotating video of the Thorns of the Brian Queen by Matthew Young
Zondara’s Gravebreakers by Peppe Solano – I’d hate to run into this Ferlain in a dark alley somewhere
Bielkins has moved onto the Gnarlspirit Pack, and has finished up a very smooth Sarrakkar Blackwing. They’ve also completed a killer Gorl Spinehammer with freehand spirit-flames out of his eyes – just marvelous as usual out of that studio
Flameon Miniatures showed off their Khagra the Usurper in video form, with freehand skulls on the shield. Stunning transitions and great work here, and you can check out the stills on their instagram. Three out of the Four Khagra’s Ravagers are now finished by Flameon Miniatures – just stunning
Unique pale green Farstriders by TestTubeRed – not at all the usual way you see them but I really like the effect
Festering Skaven in a dirty Grimdark style by Lady_Numiria
Skabbik’s Plaguepack by Charles Armitage – great highlighting on the green robes and water effects
Another solid Gorechosen, with cool frozen bases by Marcin Chludzinski
Some classic OSL Xandire’s Truthseekers by “The Mediocre Modeller”
Really nice bright yellow Zarbag’s Gitz by Michael Van Eeckhoute
Skabbik’s Plaguepack in a grimy yellow by nladium_studios
An excellent rendition of Snorbo da Spore by Juan Miguel Pereña
Remember last month’s featured paintjob from Brian Faulhaber, with the ATLA Myari’s Purifiers? Well he’s gotten a copycat criminal! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and DarthWynaut be flattering here.
The Purifiers train rolls on, this time with a Four Seasons theme from Dietz057
Crimson Court by Barthel_Loren with different skin tones, eye colors, and armor schemes for each member. Despite being a variable bunch, they have a cohesive feel as a unit and the effect is quite smooth – well done!
Vashtiss the Coiled by luckaffe1312 – check out the underlit effect
Dagg3rsB is at it again this month completing Xandire’s Truthseekers in a sick red and black scheme
Zarbag’s Gitz by nizzel55 featuring their classic black robe look, very well done
What if Khagra was chosen by Slaanesh? Firebacon321/Charsh wondered the same thing and decided to find out. Loving the subtle purples!
Farstriders under a purple moonlight OSL with otherwise monochrome appearance – a simple effect by Dynamite_aaron but one that I really like.
Niccolò Panzeri painted some fantastic Gryselle’s Arenai in a darkened-down box art style
Vernon Lees has completed some silky smooth White armored Domitan’s Stormcoven, and the burgundy cloaks really nicely offset the bright white. NMM on Sarpon’s lightning blade is great too!
Zondara’s Gravebreakers in ice blue by Not_Morathi – which also features a cool (cold?) forest backdrop
Nick Bayton has a great scenic diorama base for his Domitan’s Stormcoven (the gold ones from Hammers of Sigmar, since he has two sets. His Celestial Vindicators are great looking too)
Kixi-Taka the Diviner by fabledbrushsmiths which has a nice dark feel to it
Gristla Tenderhooke by Peppe Solano – good rust, great skin, nasty robes
Sickly green Sepsimus by Painting is my Freedom
Some members in the Skabbik’s Plaguepack in a great canvas painting style by mooseterious
Jon Grant continues to crank out good work, this month with the Skinnerkin and Zondara’s Gravebreakers
Some snowed-in Sepulchral Guard by SirMints
Vampirates by Liam Hopkins, which features a heavily converted Ennias Curseborn. Cool concept and great execution! The same painter has a cool mammoth bone diorama for the Gnarlspirit Pack with excellent basing
Sleek from Storm of Celestus with some nice volumetric skin/fur/feathers by HalfKeyHero
Good fur textures on Ratspike by qui_tam_gogh
Nice amberbone effect on Zondara’s Gravebreakers by Wedrall (Hi, Ross! See you in Tacoma)
Pokin’ Snark in bright NMM by sloofdog
You may remember the Scotland/Tartan Sepulchral Warden from last month – here’s the whole plaid warband by danmfitton
Morgwaeth’s Blade Coven by Christine Orton – sharp teal hair and purple leathers are always a great combo. Glad to see Christine return to the Underworlds paint scene!
Stunning golden flames on Ephilim’s Pandaemonium by Kyril Kalinov – I tried to do something similar with mine but nothing so slick as this! Great stuff
Domitan’s Stormcoven by Marcus Brownie Klamecker – you gotta look at this one. The blue and copper are so nice together, and offset by the green magic glow. Color theory class is in session and I’m taking notes.
That’s all for this month! Let me know if you find something cool or made something of your own to share at SpentGlory@gmail.com and I’ll post it next month! Now get out there andspend some glory
