The time has finally arrived! As announced in this post on Spent Glory, the Pacific Northwest Underworlds team, Rain City Thunderworlds, is holding a painting contest. Unfortunately, as life tends to happen, we have had a couple drops from the original contestant pool, but also a few new additions! Kevin ruptured his A2 pulley on his middle finger climbing and can’t hold a brush (rest well, Bretonnian Velmorn, we hardly knew ye), other work and life commitments popped up for Matt, Chris, and Rick, but we had some pickups by Ricky, David, and Andy, so there are a total of 12 contestants for you to choose between. This has been a lot of fun for the whole gang and I hope you’ll agree some great stuff came out in the end.
Before we dive into the entries, I want to direct you to this voting form where you can place your official votes – you’ll have a dropdown to pick 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize. Please do not vote for duplicates, and please only submit the survey once. We would appreciate comments in the box at the end of the survey – I want to be able to pass along kind words to the contestants regardless of their finishing vote tally! Now without further ado, let’s look at who had a Brush with Death this month.
Headkrakka’s Madmob (Box Art Plus) by Vanja

“By Box Art plus, I went for more display painted than the standard GW box art style (edge highlights everywhere etc) and ended up looking more at the card art. I’m very happy with how they’ve turned out, so bright and colorful Got some pigment powder on the base too.”
Exiled Dead (Electric Funeral) by John D

“Deintalos and the Electric Company, happy to AC/DC you. This was my first attempt at OSL, for the effect I used blue ink over white ink in the airbrush to make it stand out.”
Mollog’s Mob (Mollogrio) by Andrew

“From world 1-2, Mollogrio and his mob are ready to smash! Blue Shell Squig – Mollogrio & Froshi – Goombaaa – its a Stone Luigi”
Spiteclaw’s Swarm by Steve

Steve says “Getting the underlining of Skritch’s cape rich yellow was a bit tricky…as you know, yellow shows every mistake around it. I was happy with the eyes although it’s hard to see in the photos…no pupils and orange fading to yellow highlights. I was also happy with the skin shading as I tried using thinner glazing than I’ve done in the past and I like the result. It was a fun warband to paint and I’m looking forward to playing them.”
Headsmen’s Curse (90’s Eavy Metal) by Aaron

Going all in on the ’94 aesthetic, including Goblin Green on the base (from an actual pot of Goblin Green!)
Headkrakka’s Madmob by Ricky

Ricky has been featured in White Dwarf before, and it shows here.
Sepulchral Guard (SkeL.A. Lakers) by John K

“This originally was going to be a box art theme, then UW colors, and eventually the LA SkeLakers”
Blackpowder’s Buccaneers (Evil Clown) by Josh

“For some reason, I really enjoy painting gnoblars.”
Skaeth’s Wild Hunt by Anne

This is Anne’s first time doing NMM. Coulda fooled me!
Zondara’s Gravebreakers (Disney’s 1991 Beauty and the Beast) by Michael

“This was quite a challenge going for bright and aggressive cartoon colors on a 3D miniature. Here we have the beautiful Zondara as Belle, Ferlain as the Beast, Cracktomb as Chip, Toyle as Cogsworth, and Pikk as Lumière”
The Farstriders by David

David chose “The Farstriders, which is mostly just me testing out some paints and a couple new techniques. The main effect is Hoplite Gold Speed Paint with Ardcoat (gloss varnish) instead of highlights”
Brethren of the Bolt (Sketchy Spasms) by Andy

“These guys are so wacky so I went with a wacky theme! It was real fun painting in a non-traditional style. It was a challenge that I really enjoyed.”
