Featured this month is a jaw-dropping Cyreni of the Abyss painted by Robin Hagblom, who goes by Tarq on Instagram. It’s incredibly smooth, has stunning freehand on the face veil (which having painted her myself… would not be easy), and the color choices are just perfect for her overall feel. Warhammer Underworlds: Embergard has been announced, and represents a relaunch of the game as we step into a new era of Underworlds 2.0 – loads of content creators have given their take on what we know so far this month.

What the Hex
Underworlds Underground is going to wait until we have played a few games – we are not content reviewers and don’t have advance copies. We did, however, put up a Nemesis Pairing” episode aimed at beginners that was recorded for/during First Edition, but many of the principles apply to Embergard as well. If you’re looking to wrap your head around ‘how do I pick which two decks to put together’, give it a listen!

Set the Tempo (Welcome back, old legend!)
Monkey’s Hex has done some initial analysis on attack success odds based on the new rules for crits. Looks like swords took a bit of a nerf and when before 3 sword and 2 hammer were roughly equivalent, 2 hammers is now the superior profile. At 4+ dice you’ve got a pretty good chance of succeeding on an attack.
Staggerers has done some analysis of the cards revealed in the video stream with predictions on what will be most useful
The WHU Stats project now lives on Path to Glory! Check out the ‘end of meta’ analysis titled “Forever Hangry”, and you can absolutely still add First Edition games, but the Second edition entry form is live now too. Borni has reworked his submission form to allow you to report results in both the First Edition and now also in Embergard! No matter which type of game you’re playing, we all benefit from sharing our games to get a better feel on how the meta is shaping up. Submit your games to the form itself here if they are in Nemesis format and both players are intending to win with some baseline knowledge of the rules. Special instructions for submitting tournament data within, but any games can count. Please help us understand where things sit!

Skyler from What the Hex posted his 26th edition of What the Decks, and this one was a beautiful and emotional sendoff celebration of the First Edition of the game. This show has been a marvelous resource for helping lower the barrier to deckbuilding for less experienced players and while it’s on a pause for now, I am very glad it was a thing, and I look forward to whatever he does once Embergard is in full swing.
Events/Organized Play
It was a bit of a wacky month for me personally so I haven’t kept up on tournaments as much. Here’s what I do know:
The Monkey’s Hex/Flaviuz won the Italian Championships with Cyreni’s Razors and Rimewyrm’s Bite, detailing the experience here
Warhammer World held their monthly Rivals Clash on 10/4 which saw Jono Graham emerge on top of a 24-player field, piloting Cyreni’s Razors
Warhammer World held another Nemesis clash with 28 players and a tied champion – Hungering Parasite Gnarlspirit piloted by John Aspinall, and the dark horse Hrothgorn’s Mantrappers and Beastbound Assault piloted by Jono Graham!
The SoCal Open was held Oct 19-20, and ended up being a Worlds Qualifier (surprise!). The Winner Gareth who goes by KnightofNi on Discord won with Crimson Court and Tooth and Claw.
The Polish Team Championships also were held Oct 19-20 but that was right around the reveals mayhem and if they ever posted results I lost them.
The Prague Open was held November 2-3 in the Czech Republic – waiting on results for that one at the moment.

Painting/Hobby
The Brushes of the Underworlds competition has wrapped up with some very high quality warbands – several of which were submitted to Golden Daemon. Take a look at this post to see some of the best underworlds work out there. You should especially check out this Headkrakka’s Madmob by Rafael Garcia Marin that nabbed Bronze at Golden Daemon this year – multiple diorama angles here.
Golden Daemon awardees for Underworlds at Spiel were amazing! Bapiste Richebe won Gold this round with the Crimson Court with incredible red and black – I’ve seen these models in this scheme so many times, but it still floors me when done so well. Congrats!
Silver at the Golden Daemon was Ladislav Majer with Ephilim’s Pandaemonium. The sorcerer’s robes with flaring embers, the exposed musculature on Spawnmaw, the veined, glossy eye on Kindlefinger – remarkable creativity and execution.
Lukasz Borowik got a Golden Daemon commendation for these Thricefold Discord – pink is a tough color but he smashed it. If you want more Pink, here’s the Sanson Farstrider from last month with a better photo.
The Grimmest, Darkest Nurgle mini – a Sepsimus/Gulgoch kitbash with bits of Fecula’s model here and there by Mike Miklowski-Paszek. This is just atmospheric. The metal rust looks realistic, the skin is done like in a renaissance painting – holy smokes.
Jonathan Devos has finished the Myari’s Purifiers diorama and HOOO BOY is it a banger. To add to the fun, he also has a gorgeous kitbashed goblin model that combines both Grib Da Wonky Lance and Zarbag into a mounted shaman, and the squig skin has a very cool texture. Award-worthy efforts this month!
Lukas Wiggering presented some stellar Gorechosen of Dromm this month – I especially dig the flames on Herax
Stunning Prince Duvalle in a professional-level showcase by Samuel Diociase. The lighting looks quite realistic, and the face could absolutely belong to a real vampire. Just knocks my socks off. Several years ago he painted Gorath the Enforcer (quite good in its own right), and time has brought a huge skill increase along with it. Great work.
Had enough Duvalle? Of course not – it’s Halloween! Here’s a great one by Monnu Bains – nice and bloody with Red NMM armor.
The Emberwatch painted by Sando365 – this time they’re done in a black and red Anvils of the Heldenhammer scheme and DANG do they look good. I much prefer this to the standard gold box art style and while I already thought the minis were nicer than most did, it’s hard to say the warband is boring after looking at this rendition.
Similarly, Josh of WH+ (PrinceofBielTan) painted these Grandfather’s Gardeners for their league. Cool to see some alternate schemes for these warbands so shortly after their announcement.
Thundrik’s Profiteers (confirmed to be re-released for 2.0!) done up in a full NMM scheme by Bravesheep16. I especially like the gems on Thundrik’s base and the golen blade on the lil danglebro. Great work!
Great spooky blue and black Headsmen’s Curse by Verne Paints – looking forward to how these guys work in the Embergard scene. Look at that blade!
Skaeth the Hunter in a classic WHFB Wood Elf style by Alex/InTheAttic. Excellent scenic base, and the neutral/earth tones throughout the model really play well.
Thundrik’s Profiteers by Jolly Roger with great copper armor – excited to see more of these fellas now that they’re being rereleased in that Order box set.
Garrek’s Reavers by jwminiatures with remarkably smooth skin highlighting that really brings the models to life. Just stunning work all around and I always love seeing the old classics roll back out. Here’s the closeup of Karsus the Chained, which is my personal favorite. Here also is a link to a youtube video tutorial for the skin
Ironskull’s Boyz painted by Torchic_armada for Orktober – for 12 hours of work this is really impressive, and I always love to see these old favorites in the limelight.

Mir Kainan Diorama by unsafercat with great blending across the model. They set out to ‘create a mood’ and I’d say they nailed it!
Dark and Grimy Pater Filius by Suspicous_melon that has subtle but eerie OSL on the lightning effects and some nice basing foliage that adds extra texture to the overall appearance
Beautiful patina on Domitan’s Stormcoven in a brass armor scheme by Jorge Martos Gomez. Check out the closeups on Domitan himself– really solid talent on display here.
Zondara’s Gravebreakers with some really nice green OSL by Matthew Young. Underlighting from the bases, and magic surging from the tome – nice bidirectional glow going on here.
Brethren of the Bolt in a shocking green and purple by Michael Van Eeckhoute
One of the pieces of Beastgrave’s Primal Lair terrain with a great story about perseverance and seeing a project through to the end. Good stuff from ASW94

Zondara and Ferlain done in a Halloween horror style by This_Ad9714 – looks legitimately necromantic and dark magic inspired.

I missed it earlier, but the Golden Daemon winner at Adepticon was the Sons of Velmorn by Dasvid Ugolini in a great teal armor scheme, and I thought it was perfect of Spooky Season so I have brought it back for y’all.
Also oldie but goodie, the Open Competition at Adepticon gave Gold to Matt Kennedy for this Skink Starpriest with most of the model being Kixi-Taka, but on a really cool floating stone plinth
Miscellaneous
The 3D printed proxy project continued with Rustskull’s Boyz who look proppa fierce and ‘uge.
Hexy Store has released some Embergard Terrain for the new boards – single pieces for the blocked hexes for those interested. Possibly a few millimeters larger than the new hex sizes, but I bet they’ll still work well enough.
