Everybody loves tier lists; they provide a snapshot of the competitive scene from the writer’s perspective and fuel lots of debate and speculation. But Tier lists don’t exclusively have to be about competitive power! Today, let’s work together as a community to make a tier list of what warbands are the most fun to play. Since, you know, it’s a game, and games should be fun.

There’s going to be some degree of overlap with competitive strength and fun, of course. Most people prefer to win, and it’s rare to find somebody who is having fun playing a warband that is very difficult to succeed with, especially if your models just fall over dead before you can use them, or your abilities are so rarely effective that you feel like you’re playing with an empty warscroll.

In the in-between, however, are dozens of warbands that are enjoyable to varying degrees for a handful of reasons. I decided not to simply compose my own personal Tier List (just yet, anyway) of the most fun warbands, but rather to open the floor to the readers to help compile a community Tiers of Joy. We all like different things, and that’s OK! Maybe I’m not into your favorite warband. Maybe I have only played your favorite warband once or twice and just don’t ‘get it’. A subjective tier list from the perspective of one silly boi isn’t as valuable as one we build together.

So let’s set some ground rules! The ultimate guide is ‘how much do you enjoy playing with team X’, though it can be influenced by your opponents’ fun as well. Maybe you love playing as Grandfather’s Gardeners, but your opponents hate that they basically can’t kill anything. If part of the experience for you is a shared enjoyment across the table (it is for me), some warbands might take a hit that way.

I’ll have you rate whatever warbands you’d like to on a scale of S-Tier to F-Tier. Feel free to leave some blank if you haven’t played them or don’t think you can make a solid decision one way or the other. I’ll assign each letter a numeric score and average them out at the end so we can roughly place each warband into a fun tier. Here’s my guideline for what qualifies for each tier:

S – SUPER fun warband and I don’t see the point in playing anything else.
A – Awesome to play this warband, and I consistently enjoy bringing them to the table.
B – Baseline fun, playing this warband is as enjoyable as playing Underworlds normally is.
C – Can be fun, but either not tremendously so or the risk of disappointment potentially outweighs enjoyment.
D – Dry, generic feel that doesn’t make me interested in bringing them out to play with.
F – Feels bad, man. I’d rather not play Underworlds at all if I had to use this warband.

If you have specific reasoning for a warband, I’ll have a space for comments as well. Reading that you gave the Jaws of Itzl an A is cool, but it’s even cooler if I can also read how much you love the mental image of a giant dinosaur popping Obstinate and digging their clawed heels in. Maybe you gave Myari’s Purifiers a C, which is fine, but I’d be interested to hear if it’s more ‘these guys look boring to me and I’m not a fan of the aesthetic‘ vs. ‘I wish they had active abilities that allowed me to do something, rather than passive abilities with a one-time reroll in a pinch‘.
